Keeping scorpions out: what actually works
The honest hierarchy, sealing and habitat first, chemicals last
The order that works
Extension entomologists are consistent: pest-proofing (exclusion) is by far the most effective way to reduce scorpion contact, and scorpions are difficult to manage with pesticides alone.1 The University of Arizona goes further, calling them impossible to manage with insecticides alone and noting that chemical spraying is not generally effective.3
So the priority order is:
- Seal the house so they cannot get in. Exclusion is the single highest-value step.2
- Remove outdoor harborage and reduce their food supply. See the yard page.1
- Find and remove individuals with a UV blacklight at night.3
- Use chemicals sparingly, outdoors only, if at all. They are a limited add-on, not the solution.2
Why spraying alone falls short
Even the better modern insecticides only seem to provide better control, not eradication, and their use should be restricted to outdoor areas.2 Reducing the insect prey base helps but will not, by itself, eliminate scorpions from around a home.4 That is why a spray-only approach disappoints, and why the structural work matters most.
