A diligent homeowner can do the highest-value work themselves: sealing and habitat reduction. A professional is a reasonable escalation for a persistent problem, ideally one who does pest-proofing rather than spraying only. No treatment substitutes for exclusion.12

What you can do yourself

The most effective measures are well within reach of a homeowner: sealing the house (door sweeps, weather-stripping, weep-hole mesh, caulking) and clearing outdoor harborage (wood, stone, debris, trimming, moisture, and attractant lighting).12 You can also monitor and reduce numbers yourself with nighttime blacklight scouting.3

If you choose to use a pesticide, keep it outdoors and follow the label. Do not over-apply, use the protective equipment the label lists, keep children and pets out of treated areas, and let liquids dry and areas ventilate.4

When a professional makes sense

For a persistent problem, the University of Arizona suggests calling a pest management professional experienced in pest-proofing buildings and managing scorpions.2 The emphasis matters: look for one who does exclusion work, not spray-only service, because spraying alone is not generally effective.5 A professional’s chemical edge is modest anyway, even the better products only seem to provide better control and should be used outdoors.6

Because this is a non-commercial reference, the honest takeaway is that the structural fixes you can do yourself are the highest-value actions. Professional help is an option to escalate, not a required purchase.15
